Only 17.4% of North Carolina residents at high risk get screened for lung cancer. There is hope! Screening can help catch lung cancer earlier when it can be easier to treat.
*According to the American Lung Association’s 2024 State of Lung Cancer report.
LCI is dedicated to reducing the burden of lung cancer by increasing the number of people who get lung screenings. Through the Screening Saves initiative, LCI is developing a comprehensive statewide navigator network that will share best practices for implementing lung screening into practice and promote collaboration.

Lung screening can detect lung cancer earlier, when it is more treatable
Detecting lung cancer early before it spreads to other parts of the body is key to saving lives. If lung cancer is caught at an early stage, the 5-year survival rate is 5 times higher.
Screening Saves Program Support
Screening Saves is made possible through an independent grant from Merck & Co., Inc., and philanthropic support from Eli Lilly & Company, AstraZeneca, and other partners.

What is the Lung Cancer Initiative?
As a leading non-profit organization supporting lung cancer research and education, Lung Cancer Initiative specializes in connecting patients, survivors and loved ones with the medical and research community. Our mission is to advance survivorship and provide support to those affected by lung cancer through research education and access programs. To date, LCI has funded more than $3 million in lung cancer research and assisted thousands of patients in accessing treatment and meeting their basic needs after a lung cancer diagnosis.
Why Screening Saves?
Our goal is to build awareness among primary care clinicians to refer eligible North Carolina residents for lung screenings. We will also increase awareness among residents to compel those at high-risk to inquire about and follow through with getting screened on a yearly basis.
What are the program’s goals?
Our aim is to unify the healthcare community to help us prioritize lung screenings, because lung cancer takes as many lives as breast, prostate and colorectal cancers combined. With Screening Saves we aspire to:

CONNECT
Creating a powerful network of clinicians in North Carolina and then expanding this program to other areas across the country.

EMPOWER
Inspiring the medical community and our screening network in North Carolina to mobilize, educate, and compel eligible patients to get yearly lung screenings.

INFORM
Building awareness of the critical importance of screening and how to get screened for lung cancer among people at high-risk.

MOBILIZE
Motivating eligible patients to request lung screenings and helping steer them through the screening network.
