The Lung Cancer Initiative (LCI) is committed to reducing the burden of lung cancer by increasing access to lifesaving screening.
Through the Screening Saves program, LCI is building a comprehensive statewide navigator network designed to strengthen referral pathways, improve patient follow-through, and expand early detection efforts. The program connects healthcare providers, screening centers, navigators, and community partners to share best practices, reduce barriers to care, and improve coordination across the screening continuum.
By fostering collaboration and increasing awareness among both providers and high-risk populations, Screening Saves aims to advance equitable access to early detection and improve lung cancer outcomes statewide.
Knowing can feel like a breath of fresh air. A lung screening can give patients answers, peace of mind, and the chance to take action early if needed.
Joining the Provider Network
We are working to increase annual lung screening rates through education, collaboration, and stronger referral pathways.
By joining the Screening Saves network, healthcare providers can help increase awareness, identify eligible patients, improve follow-through, and support earlier detection. Together, we are building a stronger statewide system that helps more people access potentially lifesaving lung screenings.

Lung screening can detect lung cancer earlier, when it is more treatable
When caught before it spreads, patients have more treatment options and far better outcomes. If detected at an early stage, the 5-year survival rate is nearly 5x higher than when diagnosed later.
About Lung Cancer Initiative
Lung Cancer Initiative (LCI) is a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to improving outcomes for individuals and families affected by lung cancer through research, education, patient support, and access programs.
LCI serves as a connector between patients, survivors, caregivers, healthcare providers, researchers, and community partners to advance survivorship and reduce barriers to care.
To date, LCI has invested more than $4.4 million in lung cancer research and has helped thousands of patients access treatment, navigate care, and meet critical daily needs during and after diagnosis.

Lung screening can detect lung cancer earlier, when it is more treatable
Detecting lung cancer early before it spreads to other parts of the body is key to saving lives. If lung cancer is caught at an early stage, the 5-year survival rate is 5 times higher.
Screening Saves Program Support
Screening Saves is made possible through an independent grant from Merck & Co., Inc., as well as philanthropic support from Eli Lilly & Company, Johnson & Johnson, Amgen, AstraZeneca, and other partners.
What is the Lung Cancer Initiative?
As a leading non-profit organization supporting lung cancer research and education, Lung Cancer Initiative specializes in connecting patients, survivors and loved ones with the medical and research community. Our mission is to advance survivorship and provide support to those affected by lung cancer through research education and access programs. To date, LCI has funded more than $3.8 million in lung cancer research and assisted thousands of patients in accessing treatment and meeting their basic needs after a lung cancer diagnosis.
Why Screening Saves?
Our goal is to build awareness among primary care clinicians to refer eligible North Carolina residents for lung screenings. We will also increase awareness among residents to compel those at high-risk to inquire about and follow through with getting screened on a yearly basis.
What are the program’s goals?
Our aim is to unify the healthcare community to help us prioritize lung screenings, because lung cancer takes as many lives as breast, prostate and colorectal cancers combined. With Screening Saves we aspire to:

CONNECT
Creating a powerful network of clinicians in North Carolina and then expanding this program to other areas across the country.

EMPOWER
Inspiring the medical community and our screening network in North Carolina to mobilize, educate, and compel eligible patients to get yearly lung screenings.

INFORM
Building awareness of the critical importance of screening and how to get screened for lung cancer among people at high-risk.

MOBILIZE
Motivating eligible patients to request lung screenings and helping steer them through the screening network.
