Furthering Access to Radon Testing and Mitigation
Furthering Access to Radon Testing and Mitigation
Lung Cancer Initiative’s REACH Community Grant program allows organizations to pursue a project that provides the community with necessary resources. In 2020, Rebuilding Together of the Triangle, Inc. (RTT) was awarded $10,000 for their project Radon Air Mitigation Systems for Low-Income Wake County Homeowners.
Rebuilding Together of the Triangle, Inc. implemented this grant to assist individuals with homes known to have a high risk of radon exposure in eastern Wake County. With the support of additional agencies and programs such as NC Housing Finance Agency and Essential Single Family Rehab Program, RTT was able to provide relief and comfort for those affected by elevated levels of radon.
One of the systems was installed for Ms. Martinez and her daughter in Wendell, NC. RTT not only found elevated levels of radon but also other issues with their home that needed addressing. RTT helped the family get qualified for the Essential Single Family Rehab Program through the NC Housing Finance Agency. The program is leading a large rehab project, which will allow a fresh start for this mother and daughter.
From January 2020 to December 2021, Rebuilding Together of the Triangle was able to provide 26 families with radon testing and install two radon mitigation systems. With the REACH Community Grant and the work of Rebuilding Together of the Triangle, Lung Cancer Initiative’s mission of providing hope and furthering access to resources has been emphasized throughout our community.
Rebuilding Together is the nation’s largest nonprofit organization working to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize neighborhoods by providing home repair and renovation services free of charge to those in need. Rebuilding Together of the Triangle (RTT) is the local affiliate, serving vulnerable homeowners in Wake, Durham, Orange and Chatham counties.
