Lung Cancer Initiative (LCI) is committed to supporting lung cancer research, which is making a tremendous difference in extending lung cancer survival and giving hope to people facing this disease. With your support, LCI is investing over $350,000 into research in 2024, and has funded research totaling $3.4 million since our founding in 2008!

Gwen is a 9-1/2 year survivor and was diagnosed at age 31. She is one of a growing number of young people facing a lung cancer diagnosis. Here’s her story…

In September of 2014, I was a young mother of a 1-year-old little girl. I went in for a routine eye exam and the eye doctor discovered a spot on my eye she wanted me to have checked out. The next day she sent me to a retina specialist who told me the spot was a tumor.  MORE ON GWEN’S STORY HERE.

A Discussion with Dr. Jaclyn LoPiccolo and Gwen Orilio on the Role of Genetics in Lung Cancer

Lung Cancer Initiative and Lungevity spoke with Dr. Jaclyn LoPiccolo (thoracic oncologist, Dana Farber Cancer Institute) and Gwen Orilio (patient advocate) to discuss what’s known about the link between genetics and lung cancer, and why understanding these connections is important. LCI funds research through several different opportunities, including the LCI Fellows Program, the Career Development Award, and the Vicky Amidon Innovation in Lung Cancer Research AwardLCI is also honored to partner with other lung cancer advocacy organizations in funding groundbreaking lung cancer research, including the LUNGevity Foundation, Lung Cancer Research Foundation, and the V Foundation.

LCI Supports Survivors in a Variety of Ways

LCI’s survivor programs serve patients and their caregivers in all aspects of their journey, from diagnosis forward. These programs include treatment education, emotional support and financial assistance for those in need.

LCI’s Giving Hope Society recognizes the generosity and impact of individuals and families who are sustaining donors to Lung Cancer Initiative (LCI), and includes supporters who contribute or raise a minimum of $1,000 annually. Individual donations as well as funds raised on behalf of LCI through events like our LUNGe Forward Walk/Runs all count toward Giving Hope Society membership!


Hope Ambassadors provide sustaining funding to support LCI’s mission delivery through regular giving (monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly). A recurring monthly donation for one year provides ongoing support that will help us meet the increasing demand for assistance through our programs throughout the year:
