Screening Saves Program Manager

The Screening Saves Program Manager plays a pivotal role in supporting the lung cancer community by fostering relationships, driving early detection efforts, and delivering impactful programs. Reporting to the Chief Mission Delivery Officer, the Manager will build and strengthen community relationships through LCI’s early detection initiatives, empowering the general public and patients and families with knowledge to promote informed decision-making and furthering provider awareness. The role involves program development, stakeholder engagement, grant management, and community outreach for the Screening Saves program.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, execution, and expansion of the Screening Saves program, ensuring alignment with LCI’s strategic goals.

Program Development and Execution

  • Develop and manage project timelines, budgets, and deliverables for all assigned early detection programs.
  • Create and distribute culturally tailored educational materials and toolkits, including risk assessments, ensuring data is up-to-date and relevant. Develop targeted distribution plans to key audiences in communities across North and South Carolina.
  • Contribute to program development through writing and submitting grants to secure funding for LCI early detection initiatives.
  • Research and develop LCI program materials, including talking points, fact sheets, presentations, background documents, and website pages in collaboration with the CMDO and healthcare thought leaders.

Community Outreach and Engagement

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate lung cancer screening outreach and education initiatives, focusing on increasing low-dose CT (LDCT) screening rates and reducing disparities in lung cancer outcomes.
  • Lead targeted outreach efforts in rural and high-burden counties, collaborating with navigators, community health workers (CHWs), and healthcare providers.
  • Identify high-priority counties using public health and cancer registry data to guide outreach efforts.
  • Organize and represent LCI at community events, health fairs, and professional conferences to educate healthcare providers and community members on lung cancer facts, risk factors and screening.
  • Collaborate with leadership to identify new outreach and engagement opportunities to increase public awareness and participation.
  • Work with media partners to increase program awareness and promote lung cancer screening initiatives.

Partnership and Stakeholder Management

  • Built and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including medical and research communities and representatives from clinical partners, Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), hospital systems, and community-based organizations.
  • Coordinate with clinical providers, FQHCs, hospital systems (e.g., ECU Health), and community-based organizations to strengthen referral networks and build the statewide navigator network (~150+ individuals).
  • Oversee the statewide navigator network, coordinating quarterly best-practice meetings (March, September, and December virtual; June in-person).
  • Seek out opportunities to educate healthcare providers on lung screening guidelines including coordinating with partnering health systems (e.g., ECU Health).
  • Lead the early detection Advisory Committee and provide opportunities for meaningful engagement and input into LCI’s early detection programming.

Tracking and Reporting

  • Track progress on key performance indicators (KPIs), including screening uptake, referral pathways, provider engagement, media engagement, attendance, distribution of materials, and community members reached. Establish benchmarks based on best practices and in collaboration with LCI thought leaders and advisory groups (Early Detection Advisory Committee, Access Committee).
  • Attend external meetings relevant to LCI’s program initiatives and develop event summaries to share learnings with LCI staff and other stakeholder groups as appropriate.

Representation and Advocacy

  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of LCI’s mission and activities to positively represent LCI at community events, including health fairs, educational programs, and corporate events.
  • Travel to professional conferences to educate healthcare providers and other professionals on lung cancer screening.

Additional Duties

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support LCI’s mission and goals.

Reporting

  • Report to Chief Mission Delivery Officer.
  • Participate in/ report to (as needed) LCI Board meeting.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in social work, public health, health administration, or related field preferred with 2+ years of experience in program management, healthcare outreach, or community engagement in non-profit setting preferred and/or Bachelors degree with 4+ years of experience in related fields.
  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills.
  • Excellent organizational, time-management and project management skills and the capacity to successfully prioritize, work on and follow-through on multiple projects simultaneously and in a timely manner.
  • Highly collaborative style; experience developing and implementing programs with multiple entities/stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with key organizations, services, systems and leadership in the field of lung cancer in North Carolina.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Excel, MS Word and Publisher; experience with RENXT or Raisers Edge preferred.
  • Demonstrated strong research and analytical capabilities
  • Excellent interpersonal and public relations skills
  • Proactive, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel across North and occasionally to South Carolina up to 20% of the time.
  • Hybrid work environment.

Preferred

  • Familiarity with lung cancer screening guidelines and barriers to access.
  • Experience working in rural or underserved communities.
  • Knowledge of North Carolina’s public health infrastructure.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) is a plus, but now necessary or required to apply.

Volunteer and Internship Positions

Public Health Intern

The Public Health/Programs intern will assist with the planning and implementation of programs and events that support lung cancer research and education. This includes outreach in the community by connecting patients, survivors and loved ones with the medical and research community as well as education tools and access programs across North Carolina.  Interns work closely with the Director of Programs in coordination with local lung cancer survivors and advocates, corporations and health systems in seasonal health fairs and educational seminars.  Some intern tasks include:

  • Identifying and attending local health fairs to distribute free educational materials, educate community members on lung cancer screening, debunk myths surrounding lung cancer, and increase overall awareness of lung cancer.
  • Managing the Access to Care Gas Card program database including review applications, inputting data and distribution of gas cards.
  • Assisting with community outreach to lung cancer survivors and cancer centers across North Carolina, ensuring every person touched by lung cancer in North Carolina is aware of our resources.
  • Assisting in the planning and implementation of educational events such as the Annual Meeting, Community Education Webinar Series, Advocacy Summit, and Survivors Day celebration.
  • Researching and identifying new grant opportunities and funding sources to support and sustain LCI’s programs.

Marketing & Communications Intern

The Marketing & Communications Intern will gain knowledge and experience for how nonprofits are able to use marketing and communications strategies to positively impact the lives of people who are affected by lung cancer in North Carolina.  The intern will use various tools and platforms to communicate with our advocates in collaboration with the Manager of Marketing & Communications. This internship is ideal for a candidate who has an interest in marketing, communications, public relations and/or non-profit management.  Some intern tasks include:

  • Assisting with the creation of communications materials–press releases, blog posts, e-blasts, social media posts, and more.
  • Create social media drafts, schedules, and publish on social media to update and maintain LCI’s social media presence.
  • Email marketing such as draft copy for emails and upgrading email templates using graphics.
  • Update organization website by using LCI’s content management system when needed–update copy, images, web header, etc.
  • Design social media graphics, web graphics, and other marketing material for LCI.

Special Events Intern

The Special Events intern will work closely with the Director of Special Events and play a critical role in supporting important fundraising events including the LUNGe Forward 5K Run, Walk & Rally series (located in Raleigh, Greensboro, and Charlotte), the Evening of Hope Gala, Triangle Golf Tournament and other advocate-led grassroots events. Interns will work with volunteer committee members to secure sponsorships, event volunteers, donations, and other logistical tasks to prepare for a seamless event. The intern will also play an important role in helping the Lung Cancer Initiative acknowledge gifts and contributions as a part of our fundraising events. 

  • Assisting with volunteer recruitment.
  • Assisting with the collection and management of silent and live auction items for the Evening of Hope Gala.
  • Data entry and management.
  • Providing support to event planning committees and attending events.
