Welcome New Survivor Steering Committee Members

Welcome New Survivor Steering Committee Members

Author: Cheryl Lecroy, Survivor Liaison

Lung Cancer Initiative’s Survivor Steering Committee serves as the VOICE of the survivor to guide us as we develop programs, events and engagement opportunities ensuring our programs are impactful and relevant to survivor needs.  Members of this committee not only help to broaden survivor support but also to reach more survivors who could be served by programs and resources of LCI. LCI is excited to welcome two new members to the Survivor Steering Committee, Glen Holland and Emily Walthall.

Glenn Holland is a lung cancer survivor whose journey is a testament to resilience and hope. Glenn shares his story, highlighting the power of early detection, treatment, and advocacy. His experience reminds us why raising awareness and supporting the lung cancer community is so important. His passionate voice for healthy survivorship makes Glenn a perfect member of the LCI Survivor Steering Committee.

Emily Walthall is not only a lung cancer survivor but also a powerful advocate and voice of hope. Emily’s family, friends and dog are a key part of her emotional and mental wellbeing. She also seeks out experiences that connect her with a sense of awe – whether being in nature, reading a good book or listening to music. Emily believes that emotional and mental support are key whether through formal counselling or patient/caregiver support groups. Emily’s shares this message, “You are not alone. There are many trained professionals and support groups who understand what you’re experiencing and can provide support. Life goes on after a diagnosis. You are resilient and adaptable. Also remember that medical science keeps marching forward at an increasingly rapid pace!”

Like Glenn and Emily, our Survivor Steering Committee is comprised of compassionate and motivated lung cancer survivors who wish to make a difference. We utilize the committee in analysis of current programs and in implementing new survivor programming. It is important to truly understand the lung cancer journey and perspective to be effective. We select Survivor Steering Committee members from both rural and urban communities throughout NC and SC to represent at the diverse and evolving voice of lung cancer needs.

“Being a part of the LCI Survivor’s Steering Committee as a 5-year cancer survivor means so much to me. It allows me to lend my voice and experiences to ensure that every event and activity we plan truly benefits fellow survivors. Together, we create a supportive community that understands the journey, celebrates the strength of each survivor, and spreads hope and encouragement. Our shared experiences remind us that there is always light at the end of the tunnel, and together, we can inspire others to keep fighting and never lose hope.” ~ Sonia Irusta
